Scaredy Cats는 오드리 우드의 2005년 신작입니다. 고양이 형제들 중에서 가장 어린 노란 고양이와 파란 고양이가 시내에 있는 우체국으로 엄마 심부름을 가게 되어 신이났습니다. 하지만 집에서 멀어질수록 알수없는 두려움이 엄습해 옵니다. 재채기를 하다가 엄마가 주신 동전을 떨어뜨려 동전이 도망가 버리면 어떻게 하지? 괴물이 다리 밑에서 나타나 잡아먹히거나 반짝거리는 동전을 뺏기면 어떻게 하지? 광풍이 불어와 편지가 찢겨서 숲속 나뭇잎 속에 떨어지면 어떻게 찾지? 

길고 어두운 터널에서 무시무시한 강도가 나타나면 어쩌지? 별의별 무서운 상상으로 다리가 후들거려 다시 집으로 돌아가고 싶지만 두 아기 고양이는 마침내 목적지인 우체국 앞에 도착했습니다. 하지만 우체국 앞에서 진짜 더 무섭고 끔찍하고 두렵고 무시무시한 일이 벌어졌습니다. 과연 무슨 일이 있길래 두 아기 고양이들이 화들짝 놀랐을까요?
두 아기 고양이의 유쾌한 이야기는 상상속의 두려움이 실제 일을 더 망칠수 있어 모든 것은 마음 먹기에 달렸다는 것을 일깨워줍니다.

Scaredy Cats는 만화처럼 말풍선이 달려 있어 등장인물의 심리를 더욱 리얼하게 표현을 하였고, 또 오드리 우드 특유의 재치있고 생생한 그림은 글에서 다 표현되지 않은 두 아기 고양이의 무서워하는 마음을 알 수 있어 보는 재미가 있습니다.

Kitten1: You know, you were lucky I was with you.
I wasn't scared of any silly monsters.
Kitten2: Oh yes you were, and I wasn't scared no sir!
Kitten1: But you were hiding behind a tree in the forest.
Kitten2: How would you know? You were hiding behind a bush!
Kitten1: W-well, I was scared just a little!
Kitten2: Well maybe I was scared too, a tiny bit, maybe.
Kitten1: Yeah, I guess it's not such a bad thing to be frightened sometimes.
Kitten2: After all, there are scary things in the woods…
Kitten1: and under the bridge…
Kitten2: and in the dark tunnel…
Kitten1: and in the nettle field…
Kitten2: Well, next time we won't be so scared, we'll fix those monsters.
Kitten1: Yeah! We'll shake that giant troll cat by the tail.
Kitten2: We'll fix that howling wind with stout whiskers.
Kitten1: We'll fight those cat bandits with our bare paws.
Kitten2: And we'll sweep that wicked cat witch right off her broomstick.
Kitten1: Yeah, we won't be scared of anything ever again.
Kitten2: No, no not if scary things in the woods…
